chuck hagel gave an interview to his hometown paper in lincoln, nebraska "the journal star." he told the paper it should reassure america and the world that america is still a leader, and we can and will get the job done. he said, quote, that is very important for the world to realize. more the point, though, chuck hagel then said, "well, now that we've killed osama bin laden, let's leave afghanistan." he said that the pursuit of bin laden and al qaeda was, quote, the reason we invaded afghanistan ten years ago. now that bin laden was dead, the president he said has to, quote, start heading toward the exits. he said, "i believe the president will come up with a cogent way to disengage. we need to start winding this down." he said the taliban and al qaeda are two different elements. if we stay after killing bin laden, we have lost our purpose. he said the worst thing we can do is get bogged down without getting out. it wasn't that long ago, but it was interesting to look back a year and eight months ago to when bin laden was killed. i mean, at the time, anybody else think that maybe t

's my view. okay? let's start with chuck hagel replacing leon panetta. i fear hagel is going to dismantle the whole department of defense. we're talking about jack lew who is certainly further to the left of tim geithner. mr. lew is a government lifer. and john kerry well to the left of hillary clinton who was also recorded as rather hawkish as a senator. now hilda solis is resigning. not sure what that means, but as the president's moving further to the left in his second term. not a centrist. let's bring back karen finney, columnist for the hill. guy benson, and mark simone. guy, i think these appointments, all three of them, particularly, particularly hagel at defense, show a move to the left. what's your take? >> sure, i mean, of course they do, the president's a lefty, that's who he is. and now that he never has to face voters again, i think we'll see his administration drift even further to the left. i do see the lew appointment at least as an opportunity for republicans to highlight the fact that we have not had a federal budget in almost four years. and it is 100% the

confirmation process for chuck hagel. we were talking a lot about this yesterday. also some other nominees as well. but you say the white house is looking forward to these fights. why would that be? >> no, that's exactly right. this is a real window into why the president made this tough choice of chuck hagel. and that is we talked to people around the white house who said that the president wants fights with congress. and there's both a short-term strategy here and a long-term strategy. in the short term, the president wants to take advantage of the fact that he's the only person in these negotiations who's not running for re-election. so he can afford to be tough. he can afford to stand up for what he said. second, simple contempt by the president. these republicans who lost to him so badly in 2012, in his view, just won't take yes for an answer. so there's a little bit of exasperation by the president. but pull back the camera, and you see the bigger strategy, which is looking ahead to the midterm elections in 2014. by picking tough fights with the hill, the president uses his office to
